About Deb
‘DebLuvsUrPets’, owned and operated by Deb Willett, has emerged from her lifelong love of all creatures great and small. Deb first worked with animals as a teenager, on large Thoroughbred studs at Warwick and Nanango, then an Arabian stud in Taralga NSW which also ran cattle and sheep.
Over time she became intensely involved in exhibiting and breeding English Cocker Spaniels, then Irish Water Spaniels and Brittanys (a rare spaniel from France), attaining high achievements in the Show Ring. She has also bred and/or exhibited Welsh Springer Spaniels, an English Springer Spaniel and a very rare Red and White Setter.
However Deb's greatest passion has been the rare and unusual Irish Water Spaniel and she imported her first one from New Zealand in 1979, then two more from the United Kingdom in the 80’s. Two of these went on to become Australian Champions, and frozen semen was imported from a UK Champion IWS; this was the first frozen semen of this breed to come to Australia.
After completing a 3 year course at the University of Queensland Deb became a Qualified Veterinary Nurse, and these qualifications, combined with the expertise gained through involvement in the pedigreed dog world, eventually led to a position as Relieving Supervisor for the Lytton Animal Quarantine Station.
In an effort to promote Irish Water Spaniels in Australasia, Deb started a Postal Club for the breed, preparing a bi-monthly newsletter called “The Rat Tail Tattler”. This was hugely successful and within four years ‘The Irish Water Spaniel Down Under Club’ had a membership of approximately 70 enthusiasts including the top IWS breeders from all round the world. Whilst publishing the newsletter she also researched and prepared a comprehensive history of the breed in Australasia and this was subsequently included in a book published in America entitled "Champion Irish Water Spaniels 1968 - 1999". Her Imported bitch Australian Champion Doonbeg Gossip at Fenellas (Imp UK) featured as the Cover Dog for this publication which was sold worldwide.
Deb became a Dog Judge through the Canine Control Council of Queensland. She was licensed to Judge Gundogs and Hounds at Open Show level and was privileged to Judge at many Queensland specialist club shows including Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Afghan Hounds, Springer Spaniels, Borzois and Weimaraners, as well as at large prestigious shows such as the Hound Club, and many other Queensland All Breeds Clubs.
During this time she was asked to contribute to the Judge Training Scheme, preparing and delivering training lectures to Trainee Judges, and acted as a Ring Steward at hundreds of shows, including All Breeds shows and at prestigious events such as the Afghan Hound Club’s National Championship Specialty. Other achievements include; Best of Breeds and high placings at the Brisbane Royal, Melbourne Royal and Adelaide Royal Shows.
After 30 years of grooming her own exhibits for the show ring, Deb started grooming professionally at a local Veterinary Surgery in 2000, and was able to work with and learn from their retiring groomer, a long-time Standard Poodle groomer and exhibitor. Deb also worked at a large Pet Shop in Ipswich where she gained invaluable experience caring for snakes, assorted reptiles, spiders, fish and birds.
